VoIP Adapters for Small Business
By: Rob Vale
If you are running a small business or home office and one of your main expenses is telephony then you have probably already considered the benefits of VoIP. One of the things you may not know, is that you can actually continue to use the traditional telephony equipment you already own with the use of a VoIP adapter.
A VoIP adapter, as the name suggests, allows you to hook up your existing phone to your VoIP system. That is to say that you don't actually need a VoIP enabled phone.
There are various adapters available on the market, the selection of which will depend on your exact needs. As a small business consumer, your requirements will most likely be centered around a small or home office (you can find VoIP adapters for laptops etc. if you are always on the move too).
In a small office situation, you will probably want to go with an all-in-one device that can handle the routing, the switching and of course, adapting your exiting phone system for VoIP. Various devices from manufacturers like LinkSys can handle the likely load in a small office with a couple of computers and phones.
One of the benefits of such devices is that they can prioritise data. That basically means that the adapter will rank voice data above other types of internet data (such as emails and file transfers). That means that it will deliver the highest quality sound available over your internet connection.
The use of such a device does away with the need for expensive extra telephony equipment above the standard phones that you already own. Thus you can avoid posiibly the biggest expense in changing your small business from traditional telephony to VoIP.
